Q : Two questions: 1) Do you know if the shingles vaccine is on the marketyet: and 2) can Valtrex be taken prophylactically? I got shingles seven days after an angioplasty. I continue -- a year later -- to have problems with my right eye. Now I am scheduled for another angioplasty. I'm far more concerned about possibly triggering another episode of Shingles than I am about the angioplasty procedure. I would like to know if there is anything I can do preventatively at this point?

Q : I am 38, Have Shingles on my right back rib cage. It's been 5 days since I started treatment from my doctor. Two days later I developed severe pain in my troat really far down-inside of neck. It feels like an egg is there and a sharp razor blade like pain occurs everytime I try to swollow. A couple of times I panic while trying to swallow and couldn't breath. My doctor told me to gargle with salt water and use chlorasepic spray. Neither of the two reach the area of where I feel the lump. If I push on the front of my neck it really really hurts. The pain medication my doctor gave me seems to work on the shooting pain in my back but not in my throat. Is it possible I have a Shingles bloster that deep down in my throat. Also I am afraid I not going to be able to breath again. This has got to be the worst pain I have ever felt. It is nothing like a normal sore throat. What should I do.

Q :  Is there such a form of shingles which is non-eruptive? I've had severe pain, sometimes almost uncontrollable itching, and even numbness from my upper mid abck around to my front midline. ten types of blood tests, urinalysis, x-ray and ultra sound show nothing abnormal. I'm told these are classic gall bladder attack signs, but no stones exist. A CT scan is planned, but I thought the idea of non-eruptive shingles seemed plausable. Your thoughts, please. Thanks

Q : My 9-yr-old daughter has never had chicken pox but did receive the vaccine. She now has a raging case of shingles. I have read on several sites that it is believed that if you receive the vaccine that you are not susceptible to shingles. Apparently this is not so as the ER Dr. said that there have been several cases of shingles in children who had been vaccinated.

Q : My 88 yr old grandmothe has contracted shingles. Also, she was told by an Infectious Disease Doctor that in conjunction w/the shingles, she has chicken pox. How is this possible when she already had the chicken pox as a child. People don't believe her when she tells them she now has both viruses at the same time. Please elaborate on this. Thanks – Denise
